Hamilton County is the third most populous county in Ohio, after Franklin and Cuyahoga Counties. It was established in 1790 as only the second county in the Northwest Territory, and was named after Alexander Hamilton, then serving as the first Secretary of the Treasury. The county includes the lowest elevation in Ohio at 455 feet along the banks of the Ohio River; its highest point is 1,045 feet at the top of a landfill. The county seat, Cincinnati, was the first city to be established after the Revolutionary War, and the country's first inland city. Hamilton County's location on the Ohio River and the later construction of canals and railroads helped make it center of manufacturing and transportation. With the river as its southern border, Hamilton County is surrounded by Clermont County to the east, Warren County to the northeast, and Butler County to the north. Its western boundary is with Dearborn County, Indiana. Hamilton County has 21 cities, 17 villages, and 13 townships.
